5 Practical tips to prevent ransomware attacks on a backup storage

cyber security

Ransomware threat is real and much serious than a PC problem. It is important to keep a backup of the data safe. Recovering the data from ransomware is difficult and costly. So here are few tips that can be used to prevent the backup data from ransomware attack.

Use different credentials for backup storage

This is the ransomware era and it is important to have a strong backup of the data. The username and password that is used to access the backup data should be kept closed and should be used only for that purpose. The password and username should not be very common, and password must follow two-factor authentication. The other security context should not access the backup storage other than the account needed for the backup operation. The password and username of the backup account should not resemble the other account.

Have offline storage as part of the Availability strategy

One of the best ways to protect the back up from ransomware is to have offline storage of the data. There are various ways to storage backup offline and semi-offline.

Leverage different file systems for backup storage

The backup can be prevented from ransomware by using different protocols. The backup data storage should use different authentication for access.

Take storage snapshots on backup storage if possible

There are semi-offline options for storing the backup. Snapshots are one of the semi-offline ways that can be used for primary storage. If the storage devices hold a backup supports than snapshots is the best way to prevent ransomware.

Start using the 3-2-1 Rule

The backup is preventable from ransomware by using the 3-2-1rule. The rule states that there should be three copies of your media on two different media and one should be off-site. To have a secure backup it is important to use the offline media because the ransomware can affect the backup through thousands of ways.

Let the Backup Copy Job do the work for you

Another best way to have a secure backup is by having the backup copy job. It is one of the best systems, through which backup is secured at different storage which uses different preservation rules.
